Call to Worship

Leader:     This is a thin place…

People:    Where earth and heaven embrace, past interweaves with future, and people gather expectantly.

Leader:     This is a thin place…

People:    Where hope is renewed, faith is restored, peace is revived, and love is refreshed.

Leader:     This is a thin place…

People:    Where fresh words are heard, deep wisdom is revealed, and daring promises are made.

Leader:     This is a thin place…

People:    Where the God who shapes us, the Christ who remakes us, and the Spirit who inspires us, walk  among us full of grace and truth.

Leader:     God above us, God beside us, God around us, God within us…

People:    May we be open to see your grace revealed as we worship you this day.

Hymn 364                                                            “Lift Up the Gates Eternal”

Prayer of Confession (unison)

Far too often, O God, we want to look wise in the eyes of the world.  We do not speak truth with our hearts.  We say and do hurtful things to our friends.  We forget our true identity and wander into ways that are not yours.  We lose the path of true worship and focus on form and words rather than actions.  We have forgotten what true discipleship is and try to make it rules and works rather than faith and love.  Forgive us and help us become the people you created and called us to be: people of justice, love, truth, humility, and yes, even foolishness.  May we embrace our true identity and may we do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.  This we ask in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Leader:     God has called us and blessed us to live in God’s ways and not the world’s.

People:    God’s love embraces us even when we fall short of what God desires for us.

Leader:     Know that the God of blessing loves us and forgives us with a fierce tenderness.

All:             And in knowing this, may our lives and souls be transformed.  Amen.

Sharing the Peace of Christ

Leader:      To welcome each other is to welcome Jesus himself.  As we extend Christ’s peace to one another with a wave, a smile, a peace sign or offering a prayer, God’s beloved community becomes real and we are reminded that we are one family, God’s family.  So let us extend peace and love to each other.  May the peace of Christ be with you all.

People:     And also with you!

Scripture Reading                                               Matthew 5.1-12

Message                                          “The Beatitudes and the Beloved Community”           Pastor Langley

Offering Prayer (unison)

O God, you bless us in so many areas of our lives, and even in places we often fail to recognize as blessing.  Help us have eyes to see and hearts to understand the depth of your love and blessing.  Today, we give out of that blessedness, dedicating ourselves to lives of justice and love, and giving all that we are and all that we have to bring about your beloved community, here and now.  Amen.
