Hello there,
If you subscribe to The Gazette, you may have seen a familiar face and name on the front page of yesterday’s (June 5th) paper. A reporter contacted me a few weeks ago and wanted to talk about the mega-churches in the area and whether or not they are taking members away from us in the mainline churches. I think after she talked to me her article shifted because it was about the decline in church membership across the board. It was a good article and she was accurate in reporting what I said.
Unfortunately, I said more than what was quoted, and I felt that what was left out was important. I tried to stress that in the church today we need other ways to measure success than church membership and attendance. I talked about how we at FPC are externally serving and are impacting our community through our food pantry, FLY, Marion Cares, etc. etc. That part was left out. If you would like to read the article, click here.
We are having Vacation Bible School all this week at church. Thanks to all who make that happen. If all goes according to plan, the kids will sing in worship on Sunday. Pastor Beth is preaching this week. Her text is Luke 7:11-17. It is the story of Jesus raising a young man from the dead and it follows right after the text I preached on last week about the amazing faith of the centurion. It is interesting that Luke link these two stories together.
Following worship the Navigators will be hosting their annual “Strawberries ‘n More” event down in the Social Room. They will have lots of good things to eat with strawberries on them. So come and enjoy some yummy treats and good company. Proceeds from the event will benefit the new carpeting in the Social Room.
Stay in One Peace,
Howard
