This week I received an email inviting me to my 45th high school reunion this summer. I was certain there must be some mistake and they were looking for my grandfather, but, yes, when I did the math, 2017 minus 1972 is indeed 45. I don’t think I will be able to get back to upstate New York for all the festivities, but it was nice of my old classmates to go to the trouble of finding out where I am and sending me an invitation.
There is another important anniversary in 2017. Nine members of the Linn Grove Presbyterian Church (which is about 11 miles east of here) felt it was too far to travel from Marion, especially in winter. So on February 9, 1842, they came together and voted to start their own Presbyterian congregation here in town. We are celebrating our 175th anniversary this year, or our dodransbicentennial (yes, that is the right word. I looked it up on Wikipedia).
We aren’t planning too much of a celebration on February 9 because, well, it’s February. We thought it would be fun to have a big event on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, to commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit and our dodransbicentennial anniversary. So, we are looking for folks who like to party… er, who like to PLAN parties. We are putting together a team to help organize some outstanding festivities with food, music, decorations, anything and everything to make it fun and memorable. If you are at all interested, or would like to volunteer your spouse, please talk to Pastor Beth or me.
This Sunday the Chancel choir will be singing in the first service. I will be preaching on two related texts. Matthew 4:12-17 refers to a prophecy found in Isaiah 9:1-4. My sermon title is “Into the Light.”
Stay in One Peace,
