Weekly Contact- April 11, 2019
Hello there,
It is that time of year when the weather can be warm and spring-like one day and grey, cold and miserable the next. But so far the weather forecast for this Saturday looks a bit chilly, but dry and sunny. So starting at 8:30 we will be having our spring clean-up day, for the church property. We will rake up the leaves and trash, sweep up the sand and grit and generally get the grounds in good shape for Easter. WE NEED YOUR HELP, even if you can only spare an hour. Bring blowers, rakes, brooms, shovels and whatever else you think to get things spruced up. If it should rain we will reschedule for Saturday, April 20th.
We have Palm Sunday coming up and Bob Roussell has pulled together an instrumental ensemble to open the 9:00 worship service that will just blow you away. You absolutely will not want to miss that. The Chancel Choir is singing in the first service. I am preaching on two texts, Luke 18:28-40 and Philippians 2:5-11. My sermon title is “The King Who Comes in the Name of the Lord.”
There will be a Pancake Brunch put on by the youth between services. Come hungry and be generous, because the donations you make will benefit the summer youth mission trips. There will be a praise service at 11:00
Here is the schedule for the rest of Holy week:
On April 18th Maundy Thursday there will be a Tenebrae-Communion Service at 6:00 in the sanctuary. The word “tenebrae” comes from the Latin meaning “darkness.” The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of Holy Week. This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus’ death and of hopelessness in the world without God.
On April 19th Good Friday, there will be a Communion Service at 1:00 in the Chapel
April 21st is Easter Sunday. We will celebrate the Resurrection with only ONE SERVICE AT 10:00.
The following Sunday, April 28th we will celebrate the Gifts of Women. It also will be only one service at 10:00. The Rev. Connie Peake will be preaching. For the month of May, we will be back to two services at 9:00 and 11:00.
Finally, check out the church’s website: www.fpcmarion.org especially on your smartphone or tablet. We have upgraded the software to that it streams better on mobile devices. We hope to be updating the content of the website in the next few months.
Stay in One Peace,
Howard
