First Press Weekly – 1-30-20

Dear Members and Friends,

I am in Little Rock, Arkansas, my first visit to this city and state. I’m here for the Association of Presbyterian Christian Educators annual conference. I’m guessing there are about 500 or more of us.

Ginny and I walked down a long street to the Clinton Library when we arrived. Neither of us has been to a presidential library before. It’s a fairly green building. We took the tour deciding that it would cover the highlights among the massive collection. It has, of course, replicas of the Oval Office and Cabinet Room. There was a temporary exhibit of the year 1999. That may feel like ancient history to some, but to us that exhibit and presidential era was quite nostalgic.

I have taken two other tours which are part of the conference. One was to the Little Rock Nine and Central High National Historic Museum. Elizabeth Eckford, one of the students who helped desegregate the school, addressed the conference. More on that another time.

Ferncliff School was another tour. It’s an out-of-doors pre-school. Yes, the children are outside except for when there’s thunder or lightening. It’s also a green conference center. Bottom line is we’re in the first full day of the conference and I’m feeling information overload.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Sunday, February 9, following worship those who are interested will gather in the Social Hall to participate in a portion of the congregational self-study in preparation for forming a pastor nominating committee (PNC). This effort will take only an hour, but we’ll generate a great deal of information. The more people of all groups and ages who participate, the richer the study will be.

With gratitude,

Terry

Coming in February

Congregational Forum:  February 9.  See above.

From the Library:  The library volunteers are in the process of weeding out older and under-used books.  Over the next few months, these books will be displayed on a cart in the Social Hall after worship for anyone who would like a last chance to read them.

Green Team:  In addition to swapping out paper/Styrofoam products for real tableware, there is a small team interested in incorporating more eco-friendly practices here at FPC and taking better care of God’s creation.  The first Green Team meeting will be Tuesday, February 27, at 7:00 pm.  All are welcome!  If you are interested but unable to make the meeting or have questions, reach out to Danyel Kolek, Kim Langley, Cara Lausen or Abbie Parker.

Contact Joan West or Sharon Colton for information on upcoming Navigator events.
