Feeding Lunch to Youth
FLY stands for Feeding Lunch to Youth. A few years ago some of the local teachers got together and talked about the students who rely on hot lunch programs at their schools. For some students, those are the only meals they get. On days when there is no school, there may be no food for them. Out of that discussion FLY was started to meet the needs of those children who may not eat when school is not in session. The first lunch was served during winter break of 2007. Since that time, it has grown and an average of 200 to 300 lunches are served a day when school is not in session.
FLY is supported by nine congregations and that number is increasing. Marion Christian, Living Water UMC, Christ Community UMC, First Presbyterian, Echo Hill, St. Joseph Catholic, New Life, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, and volunteers from a variety of other congregations help make this program a success.
