Do you remember the Bobby McFerrin classic, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”? (You can thank me for the earworm later.) “In every life, we have some trouble, but when you worry you make it double. Don’t worry, be happy.” Man, do I wish I could take those words to heart!
I am a worrier by nature. I think it’s just how I’m wired. The thing is, most of what I worry about never even happens! And, if I’m honest, a lot of it isn’t even mine to worry about in the first place. I guess I just have a really hard time letting God be God rather than trying to play God.
I heard a speaker say once, “There’s 3 kinds of stuff in this world: your stuff, my stuff, and God’s stuff. It’s up to you to figure out which is which.” So, here’s what I do when worry is getting me down…sometimes with little success…but God help me, I try…I really do try.
First, I look at my hands. If there aren’t any scars from the nails, it’s time to remember I’m not Jesus…I’m not perfect…and that’s OK. Next, I ask myself, “Is what’s happening going to make Jesus come back? If not, it isn’t the end of the world…so step back, relax, breathe, and then do what needs to be done.” Worry is a needless burden that really takes the fun out of life and keeps us from living the amazing life we have in front of us. If what’s happening isn’t going to add anything productive to your life, put that worry in its place.
Jesus said, “And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life…So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Focus on the stuff that’s yours and let tomorrow take care of itself.
Now, whistle along if you know the tune. “Here’s a little song I wrote. You might want to sing it note for note. Don’t worry, be happy…”
