The first worship service in our beautiful sanctuary was held in September of 1885. We are blessed today by the dedication and optimism of those who came together to build such a structure. And yet, as far thinking as they were, back then no one gave much thought to those who had special needs and could not climb stairs. If you were unable to get up to the second floor, you could not be a full participant in the life of our congregation. That is just the way it was.
In the 1980s when more space was added to our building, it was decided to remedy that situation and install a small elevator to allow access to the second floor and our sanctuary. However, after nearly 30 years of operation, age was taking its toll. It was jamming more and more often, at times requiring expensive repairs.
In April of 2012, we began the construction of a modern, easy to operate, full size elevator just off our new entry way on the north side of our building. We expect it to be completed by the first of August, 2012.
The cost for this project is approximately $265,000. We received major gifts from Lumir and Sara Dostal ($60,000) and Bert and Sue Katz ($10,000) and the Session approved earmarking funds for the elevator project for another $53,000 combined from the Edna Dahms and Marjorie Jones estates. Other contributions and pledges as well as some fund raisers have brought in more so that we now have close to $200,000. We are well on our way to paying for this entire project.
