I recently read about a blooper in a church bulletin. It was during Advent and the line read, “The Word is made flesh and is swelling among us.” Actually that is not a bad description of what we call the incarnation is all about. We try to wrap our minds around the idea that the Infinite and All Powerful One, became a microscopic bundle of cells within a woman’s body. But then swelled into a baby, grew to be a man, and through his life, death and resurrection the message of God’s love continues to swell and expand down through history and across this world.
Perhaps you feel like the pressure of the season is swelling at a rate that is out of control. It is easy to get caught up in all the busy-ness, the shopping, the decorating, the planning, the traveling. I hope you will make a deliberate effort to find some moments of peace and joy as you reflect on God’s great gift of love to all humanity, and to you in particular. Here is the schedule of services over the next few weeks.
This coming Sunday we should have all the poinsettias brightening up the sanctuary. It will be a wonderful service at 9:00 for there will be a brass ensemble, led by Bob Russell, and playing a number of times throughout the worship. In addition, the Chancel Choir has a beautiful piece prepared that will be accompanied by the Chancel Bells. If that all doesn’t get you into the Christmas spirit, I don’t know what will. I will be preaching on Luke 1:26-37, 46-55, continuing with our “Do Not Be Afraid!” sermon series. This time, of course, it is, “Do Not Be Afraid, Mary!” There will be Sunday School for all ages following the first service, including Coffee Chats. We will also be having our Synergy Service at 11:00.
Next Sunday, December 24th, we will have one worship service at 9:00 in the morning, with no Sunday School. Pastor Beth will be preaching. We will be having a family Christmas Eve service at 5:00 and a Christmas Eve Communion service at 7:00 and I will be preaching. On December 31st we will have one service at 9:00 in the morning. Pastor Nancy Redman will be preaching at that service.
May you sense God’s love swelling within you over the next few weeks and may we all make every effort to stay in One Peace.
